| October 2011: |
Shortly before their defeat at the last elections in June 2009, the previous council altered the staff contracts to give the staff greatly increased payouts in the event of redundancy.
After receiving legal opinion that those altered contracts were unlawful, the current council disputed the extra payout.
Bedford Industial Tribunal has now ruled that even if the decision of the former council was irrational, those altered staff contracts do have to be honoured by the current council.
The payout according to those altered contracts amounts to around £200,000 (in contrast to approximately £40,000 before the contract alteration).
This equates to the majority of the council's remaining funds.
It was otherwise hoped that this council tax money would have been rebated back to the tax-payers of Letchworth when the council is dissolved.
